European Information Commissioner Viviane Reding has called for further reductions to roaming charges than the measures set out last week in the regulatory review. A press release published last week by Onecompare pointed out that 43% of consumers don’t realise that they are also charged for incoming calls whilst abroad, and 49% of people didn’t know how much it cost them to make or receive calls whilst abroad.

The unjustified costs need to be addressed and the mobile phone networks need to strike the right balance of making a profit and giving the consumer a fair deal. Operators have been making 300% and 400% profit on receiving calls compared to the equivalent prices for domestic mobile calls.

Despite claims to the contrary from the networks, Reding assures us that the proposed legislation is not going to prevent mobile operators giving customers differently structured and possibly better deals, such as Vodafone’s Passport tariff that charges a flat fee per call rather than a per minute fee. She continues on welcoming networks to take action now and offer these types of deals that go further than the regulatory review demands.
