Orange release unique call plans
Onecompare revealed to our readers on 20th June Oranges plans to release voice over IP (VoIP) mobile phone schemes we also updated you in September and now the plans are available to buy.
The two 18 month plans called Canary 50 with Unique Phone and Panther 65 with Unique Phone give you cheaper calls by automatically switching to your Orange broadband network when your at home. Your mobile will automatically switch to your broadband network when you’re at home and you will also receive unlimited calls to UK landlines and Orange mobile phones when connected.
Customers who sign up can connect up to 6 unique phones per home to their VoIP services, with up to three people being able to make calls (through VoIP) at the same time. Each mobile phone would have a different telephone number and each phone would need to be signed up to the Canary 50 or the Panther 65 plan to use the VoIP service.
The Canary 50, with a monthly line rental of £50, gives you 600 cross network minutes and 400 text messages. The Panther 65 with a monthly line rental of £65 gives you 1200 cross network minutes and 250 text messages. When you sign up to either of the packages you also receive a livebox wireless modem. The monthly line rental also includes your handset price.
At the moment the unique plans are only available on the Nokia 6136, Motorola A910 and the Samsung P200. Not an extensive mobile phone selection and possibly not as cutting edge as an early adopter of VoIP technology would like.
If you pay your bill by direct debit you won’t incur any extra charges, but if you want to pay on a month by month basis you will be charged £3.50 per month.
Time will tell if the service proves popular or whether people will be put off by the small selection of handsets, and opt for the standard price plans. Although people would not get unlimited landline or orange to orange calls on the standard plans, some plans offer a wider selection of handsets, a magic number which allows free calls to a selected orange mobile phone (with the option to add another number each 6 months), free broadband (for plans over £30) and a cheaper monthly line rental. We wait to see which proves more popular.
