Google, the well established internet giant has held talks with Orange about a new revelation in the way we can access the internet.
The plans would involve a multi-billion dollar partnership which will allow mobile phone users to surf the net wherever they are, making it as easy as going online on your computer at home.
The mobile phone itself would be based on the Google brand, but would probably carry Orange’s logo. The handset would not be unique; it’s the internal working which makes this phone something special. The handset would have built in Google software which will dramatically improve the sluggish browsing of today’s leading phones. Google’s software will also feature location based searches – allowing users to be aware of the geographical location of the handset, and extensive details of local cinemas, restaurants and other amenities, plus maps and images from Google earth.
The phone itself will be manufactured by HTC, a manufacturer of Smartphone and PDA Phone devices. It’s not surprising both Google and Orange chose HTC to help manufacture their new phone, seeing how HTC have produced extremely advanced handsets ahead of the competition, including being the first company to bring out High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), which allows users to perform voice and data functions simultaneously. HTC is one of the fastest growing companies in the mobile device market. HTC’s total revenues for November 2006 reached NT$ 10,956 million, up 4.91% year over year.
Orange have previously used HTC to manufacturer some of their phones, including the Orange SPV C500, SPV C550, SPV E200 and the SPV F600. SPV (which stands for 'sounds, pictures, video') was the first phone on sale in the UK to use Microsoft's Smartphone software.
Google already offers its search engine services on mobile phones. It has a partnership with Vodafone and last month went into Partnership with the operator 3, providing the company with a broadband service. Google is also working with You-Tube to bring video-sharing direct to your mobile, allowing users to readily share and access videos whilst on the move. This is a great feature for young mobile users who will be able to capture or record a moment and instantly share it with the online community without having to wait to upload the content at through a PC.
People who use Google on their computers at home or in work frequently use Google for searching, Gmail for Email, and also have spreadsheets and documents saved online with Google. Although there are no real leaks on what the phone will definitely offer, being able to synchronize your online mobile information with your desktop at home would be a huge benefit. The new Google phone has a lot to live up to if it wants to meet the expectations of the eagerly waiting customers.
It is believed that the Google phone would not go on sale before 2008, but both Orange and Google declined to comment.
