One surprised customer was shocked when his new Nokia 6280 suddenly started emitting smoke and melting.
Nokia is under scrutiny after one of its widely produced handsets, the Nokia 6280 melted after previously emitting smoke from the seams. David Crayford, a cab driver from Gloucester said his new 3G phone started overheating and 'fizzing white smoke' hours after switching it on for the first time.
David had gone to his local mobile phone store earlier in the day to pick up a hands free set so that he could use the phone in his car. The phone was an upgrade from 3, who send him the new 6230 on contract.
'It's a good job it didn't do that while it was in my pocket or on the side of my head,' David exclaimed.
Early indications suggest that the problem could have been caused by a fault with the battery or charger, although David is adamant that he only used the battery and charger provided to him by 3.
In the past, Nokia have faced similar problems involving malfunctioning phones caused by counterfeit batteries and chargers. Nokia has tried to stamp down on unauthentic batteries and chargers being used on Nokia handsets, although their attempt to limit the issues is difficult considering the amount of Nokia customers in the UK alone.
A spokesman for Nokia said: 'All Nokia mobile phones are required to pass stringent safety checks before they are made available to customers. We are concerned to hear about this incident and would like to assure all customers that our goal is customer satisfaction and safety. In this particular case we will be arranging to examine the product and investigate the cause of the problem.'
Although Nokia are looking into this issue further, it doesn’t make up for the fact that one of their mass produced handsets could have caused a serious accident, and that no-one is any wiser if it was the only handset which is faulty, or if there is a whole batch of 6280’s which are waiting to ‘go up in smoke’.
