Big Brother is on the hunt for a new sponsor for its summer 2007 show.
Monday, March 19, 2007
Back in January Carphone Warehouse suspended its sponsorship of the Channel 4 reality TV show, following the racism allegations on Celebrity Big Brother. Within the first week of March Carphone Warehouse finally decided to end their 3 year deal with the show, leaving Channel 4 looking for a new sponsor.
A spokesperson for Carphone Warehouse said:
"We have concluded that the huge publicity around the show and our involvement within that means that now is the time for us to look for an alternative."
Within days of Carphone Warehouse pulling the plug Orange released a statement saying they had been approached by Channel 4 about a sponsorship deal. Orange left the decision in the hands of their 12,000 employees – they were asked for their opinion on the possible sponsorship. However, the employees voted against the deal, leaving Big Brother again without a sponsor.
Channel 4 are keeping tight lipped about possible deals, stating only that they are in talks with a number of high profile brands. Past sponsors include: Southern Comfort, BT Cellnet, O2 and TalkTalk, so speculation is high that the new sponsor will be a communications company.
Ladbrokes are taking bets on the situation with Phones4U as favourite to take over the sponsorship deal; Virgin Media, Toyota & Lynx are also in the running.
