Austrian firm Emporia have specifically designed a mobile phone for the older generation.
Tuesday, March 20, 2007
Many people find today's mobile phones to small, fiddly, and complicated to use and have many features that they just don't need or want, such as MP3 players and cameras. Emporia have taken this into consideration and produced the Life Phone specifically designed for the 50+ market.
The Life Phone will go on sale around the world in May. It has an extra loud speaker, large display screen and large buttons making it ideal for the hard of hearing and partially sighted. It has an extra-strong vibration to alert the user of an incoming call or text message.
The Life Phone would be a perfect replacement for the BT Cellnet handsets that were recently disconnected by O2. This angered many people who preferred the Cellnet's simple functions and large buttons to modern smaller mobile phones. One extra benefit of the Life Phone is that it has a much larger display screen than the BT Cellnet mobile phones, and measures 6.8cm (2.7in). The display has an orange back light which makes text easier to read for people with failing sight.
Life Phone's basic functions only allow its users to make and receive phone calls, and send and receive text messages. Users can manage their "contacts" directory of phone numbers, and can even programme in up to five emergency numbers. On the back of the mobile phone is a large red button, this can be activated in an emergency and will contact one of the preset emergency numbers to alert them that there is a problem.
Basic mobile phones seemed to be starting a trend, Vodafone offer two mobile phones in their Simply range, the Sagem VS4, and the Sagem VS3. Nokia also released their simple handsets a few months back, the 1112, 2310, 2610 and the 2626. It just shows that sometimes technology isn't everything and simplicity and ease of use prevail.
