Web browsing review on the N73.
Tuesday, April 10, 2007
Onecompare.com used the N73 with X-Series to browse the web for our latest review. Now that Three does not have a ‘walled garden’ internet you have access to the whole internet, not just Three’s own websites.
The mobile internet has come a long way from its early days, you can now view the majority of websites, showing pictures and some pages will be specially sized so that they fit the smaller mobile screen.
Disadvantages are that it can be quite slow to load new pages, even with a 3G handset, and you do need good coverage to use it well. Also some sites cannot be scaled down to fit the screen properly so appear broken up and cannot be viewed easily.
Through the links on Three Internet we were able to look at sites such as bbc.co.uk, Sky News, Amazon and lastminute.com, these were specially designed mobile sites so there was no problem with scaling. We were able to view items on Amazon, and could even order from the mobile website. From lastminute.com we could search flights and hotels easily.
When we tried entering addresses manually we were able to get to pages such as hotmail.co.uk, myspace.com and Onecompare.com, although they were quite difficult to navigate as they are more complicated pages. We were able to look at messages on hotmail and myspace although it was difficult to navigate as the pages were not scaled to size.
Onecompare.com tested the eBay mobile website, and found it very easy to search for items, and could even watch and bid on items. The only thing you can’t do is list new items for sale – this has to be done on a PC.
Both the Silver and Gold X-Series packages advertise unlimited data usage (there is however a fair usage policy of 1GB per month) for use on web browsing. This makes browsing using the X-Series much cheaper than ‘pay as you browse’ on other networks, with charges of up to £3.00 per MB used.
Onecompare.com have found the Three internet easy to use, great value for money, and in general it works well as a lot of large well known websites have mobile versions of their sites.
