Free Skype calls on your mobile from X-Series.
Skype is a service which allows users to make free calls over the internet, this has previously only been available from PC to PC, however 3 have added the service to their X-Series mobiles.
This means that through the Skype application you can call other Skype users completely free using the X-Series package. 3 gives you 5,000 Skype minutes to use per month as a part of their fair use policy, for use to other Skype users only.
Onecompare.com downloaded the Skype application from the links on the 3 mobile website, you are then asked to either input your existing Skype username and password or create a brand new account. Onecompare.com created a new account quickly and easily (and we were able to log into the PC version of Skype using these details).
Once you are logged in you can make and receive calls, conference call, add Skype contacts and set your online status. At the moment it isn’t possible to make SkypeOut calls (calls to mobiles and landlines at low costs) or Skype Chats (instant messenger service); however 3 are looking at introducing these in the coming year.
When we tested the service we found it easy to make and receive calls, there was a slight delay on speech but the overall quality was very good and it was possible to hold a conversation clearly. Unfortunately at the moment there is no caller ID on Skype calls, the screen will show ‘Skype service’ when a contact calls you, this is set to be updated this year.
Onecompare.com were impressed by the Skype service, for an extra £5.00 per month (on the Silver package) you can add 5,000 Skype minutes. For those with contacts who already have Skype this will be a great addition to their deal as those extra minutes will go a long way.
