First network to reduce charges before the EC deadline of 29th August 2007
Thursday, July 12, 2007
The European Commission have ruled that as of 29th August 2007 all mobile operators are to have reduced the cost of international calls, the maximum chargeable amount for making a call from an EU country will be 33 pence per minute (ppm), and the maximum amount for receiving a call in an EU Country will be 16ppm.
Tesco Mobile have announced a drop from 40ppm to just 35ppm to make a call within the EU, and 15ppm to receive a call in the EU. Tesco are the first network to reduce the rates before the August deadline, but will still have to reduce the cost to make a call before August 29th.
Tesco Mobile have reduced their standard calling rate for international calls, meaning that it applies to all customers immediately, and customers don’t need to sign up or work out which package suits their international usage.
Other networks such as o2 and Vodafone have stated that they already comply with the capped charges, but only when customers sign up to certain special plans or bolt on’s – their standard rates are much higher than these headline prices.
The Chief executive officer of Tesco Mobile said:
“We welcome the new legislation but we want our customers to get better value right away. It seems ludicrous that some mobile phone companies may make customers wait until the end of summer to lower their mobile roaming prices.”
Tesco’s price cut has happened just in time for the summer holiday season, and we now await decisions from the other networks over the next month.
