Other retailers jump on the band wagon with mid contract swaps.
Carphone Warehouse introduced Swapit in the middle of last month, a special deal which allows customers to swap phones halfway through an 18 month contract. Customers must take an 18 month contract with o2, Orange or T-Mobile, and swaps take place during a period of 90 days once you have completed 9 months of your contract. You must return the original phone to Carphone Warehouse when you swap – just the phone and battery are required, you can keep anything else that came with the original phone.
All phones and tariffs available on Swapit have been categorised into Bronze, Silver or Gold bands, based on cost. You can choose a phone from the same or lower band for free or can pay to pick a phone from a higher band. All currently available phones are listed on the website in bands to give you an idea of what phone you could swap to on your band.
| Handset banding | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | Silver | Gold | ||
| Bronze | Free | £49.99 | £99.99 | |
| Silver | Free | Free | £49.99 | |
| Gold | Free | Free | Free | |
Swapit is a really good idea for those who are worried about taking out an 18 month contract and being stuck with a boring old phone!
However since then we have heard of three other companies offering very similar deals. Phones2udirect are running X-change, where customers can swap phones after 8 months (for a limited period of 60 days). The phone and all accessories must be returned when making an x-change, a deposit of £50 must be paid when ordering the replacement as this will be sent out before the old one is returned within 7 days. It seems at the moment x-change is only available on Vodafone £40 tariff.
Chitter Chatter, a chain of retail stores based around London have Phone Swap, which is only available on Flext £35 18 month contracts. All available phones have been put into bands, with bands 1-4 being free, 5 & 6 cost £49.99 and 7 & 8 are £99.99 – although it is not clear which phones are in which band.
Finally Fonehouse, again based mainly in London, have named their offer – Swap it! OneCompare.com couldn’t find many details on Fonehouse’s offering, but it is believed to only be available on T-Mobile 18 month contracts.
Deals offering to swap your phone halfway through your contract are a great idea, however be aware that these type of deals will not usually include cashback – the second phone is generally in place of cashback.
