O2 and Carphone Warehouse win the iPhone deal.
After what seems like an eternity it has finally been officially announced that o2 will carry the 8GB iPhone in the UK, and it will be available exclusively from o2 stores, online and through the Carphone Warehouse.
Both o2, Carphone Warehouse and Apple have updated their websites this morning to show the long awaited news! The iPhone will be available from the 9th of November and as predicted it will not be available for free on any contract – but will come with a price tag of £269.00 on all tariffs. It will only be available on three different o2 contracts as follows:
| O2 £35 | O2 £45 | o2 £55 |
|---|---|---|
| 200 minutes | 600 minutes | 1200 minutes |
| 200 messages | 500 messages | 500 messages |
| Unlimited data | Unlimited data | Unlimited data |
| Unlimited Wi-Fi | Unlimited Wi-Fi | Unlimited Wi-Fi |
This means that unlimited data and Wi-Fi is costing an extra £10.00 per month from the usual o2 tariffs, and on the £55 tariff it is only an extra £5.00 per month. However, some people will be disappointed that there has been no word of an upgrade to 3G for the UK, so it looks like we will be stuck with EDGE.
Of course the iPhone will be limited to two phones per customer and to enforce this customers will only be able to buy using a credit or debit card – cash will not be accepted. And you will only be able to subscribe to online billing.
As with the USA version, the iPhone will be activated through iTunes once the customer has bought the phone. The Apple site states that customers will go through the registration process through iTunes to activate the phone, choose a tariff and complete a credit check. This is slightly confusing as this is obviously not how we normally do this in the UK, as we usually complete the credit check and pick our tariff before we have left the store – so here at OneCompare.com we are a little bit stumped, but time will tell how this will work.
We will probably start seeing pre-orders for the iPhone shortly and demand for the iPhone will no doubt be massive. The o2 website has already suffered since making the announcement, as the o2 shop went back offline shortly after the iPhone was put on there!
Why not enter our iPhone competition and become one of the first people in the UK to own an iPhone when it's released.
