Ofcom propose a way for mobiles to be used on aircraft
A proposal has been published by Ofcom that would allow mobile calls to be made at altitudes over 3,000 feet. This is of course subject to approval and will need to be proved to be completely safe before the go-ahead is given by the aviation authorities.
Planes will need to have their own networks fitted for phones to work in the air, which will only be switched on at 3,000 feet. It is unknown yet whether the plane’s network will charge a fee for connecting, or simply route your call onto the relevant network.
For the system to be safe Ofcom proposes that the minimum height above ground should be 3,000 feet. The network will only be used by 2G phones initially, but would be rolled out to 3G phones if proved to be successful.
OneCompare.com is wondering how many people will shake their head in despair at this – people talking loudly on mobiles are annoying enough on a 20 minute bus ride, imagine a 9 hour flight with the same annoying mobile user…..
