O2 Wallet will allow customers to buy items by using mobiles as a pre-pay credit card
Today o2 have announced a partnership with Barclaycard and Transport for London (amongst others) to trial NFC by combining an Oyster card and Barclaycard payment system. 500 guinea pigs have been given a Nokia 6131 and will use it as a payment system around selected London stores. The phones will work by having credit put on them, and when a purchase is made the phone will be swiped across a special reader, and the money will be automatically deducted from the credit.
Apparently half the trial phones have been preloaded with £200 to allow those participating to properly see how the system works. And with stores like Krispy Kreme, Coffee Republic and Threshers on the trial – the lucky ones will be having a fun few months.
The o2 Wallet will be able to be used to pay for items under £10, and each person on the trial will have to report back to o2 to let them know how it has gone, before it is rolled out to a wider audience. O2 are hoping that on completion of a successful trial they can make the o2 Wallet available to all customers in London.
