3G iPhone at last

Apple finally confirm the world’s worst kept secret
Last night Apple confirmed that they will be bringing the Apple iPhone 3G to the market on July 11th 2008, again exclusively on o2 - through o2 Direct and the Carphone Warehouse.
Now not a great deal has changed on this newer model of the popular mobile – it is now 3G capable so browsing the web should be much quicker, and it will also come with built in GPS.
The Apple iPhone 3G will again be available in two models – 8GB and 16GB, however this time there will be two different colour schemes. The 8GB will be available in both black and white, while the 16GB will only be available in black.
The other main differences are:
- Contact search – allows for easy searching by typing in the start of a contacts name
- iWork document support for PowerPoint
- Bulk deleting, moving and saving images from emails
- Better battery life (300 hours standby and 10 hours talk time)
The full specifications are below, notably the camera has remained as a dismal 2 megapixel quality.
- Camera: 2 MP
- Size: 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm
- Weight: 133 g
- Screen: Touchscreen, 16M colors, 320 x 480 pixels, 3.5 inches
- Style: Standard - touchscreen
- Operating System: Mac OS X v10.4.10
- Memory: 8/16 GB shared memory
- Media: iPod audio/video player
- Connection: GPRS, Edge, 3G, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB
- Extras: In built GPS, Accelerometer and Widgets support
More interestingly are the new revised tariffs and prices of the iPhone. The Apple iPhone 3G will be subsidised by the network o2 and will actually be available for free on certain tariffs:
| Line Rental | Inclusive minutes | Inclusive messages | Data & Wi-Fi | Cost of 8GB | Cost of 16GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| £30 p/m | 75 | 125 | Unlimited | £99 | £159 |
| £35 p/m | 600 | 500 | Unlimited | £99 | £159 |
| £45 p/m | 1200 | 500 | Unlimited | £99 | £59 |
| £75 p/m | 3000 | 500 | Unlimited | £99 | Free |
This approach should mean that more people are able to take advantage of the iPhone without having to fork out a whopping £269 up front like last time. According to Apple 56% of consumers were put off by the high cost of the previous iPhone.
The Apple iPhone will also be available on PAYG, although the price of this is yet to be announced. And existing iPhone customers will be able to upgrade to the 3G version simply by signing up to a further 18 month contract, the costs for the phone will be the same as new customers though.
So if the Apple iPhone is your thing, but you were one of the many who were disappointed with the lack of 3G – then here is your answer!
