This is a first in a series of articles over the coming days about what Sony Ericsson have got under their creative hats for us in 2006
Wednesday, February 15, 2006
Sony Ericsson have been busy in the design labs and have come up with plenty of interesting new mobile phone handsets for 2006. In the first installment we'll take a look at the M600i and W950i handsets, so without further ado lets take a look at the M600i
Due out around Spring, the Sony Ericsson M600i 3G communicator is designed first and foremost as business phone so expect plenty of smart phone type functions such as reading emails, RSS feeds, PowerPoint, Word, Excel and PDF files. There is a touchscreen with handwriting recognition for that PDA-like touch, but also a blackberry-esque keypad allowing for quick and easy typing of messages. The handset comes with 80MB of internal memory but as is usual with Sony Ericsson handsets, this can be upgraded using Sony's Memory Stick cards, and you get a free 64MB one included in the box.
The M600i is a great size for a handset that encompasses so may high end features. It is only 15mm thin, 107mm tall and 57mm wide, tipping the scales at 114 grams, however the small size has come at a price. In order to keep the handset under the usual size required for so many PDA like features we are missing a camera and the WiFi support seen in many handsets which will be competing with it.
As with many of the Sony Ericsson designs we are seeing lately they have decided to release a Walkman branded version of the M600i, dubbed the W950i
The Sony Ericsson W950i is expected around late summer 2006 and is for all intents and purposes a 'Walkman' variation of the M600i, however it does have some tricks up its sleeve to capitalise on the Walkman branding - namely a huge 4 GB of internal memory. To accomodate the "music" angle, the W950i has a more standard keypad (losing the blackberry style layout) with some extra dedicated keys to make it easier to access your multimedia content on the go. The ability to store so many tracks and it's pocket pleasing size and impressive functionality is sure to make this handset one of the more desirable new releases of 2006.
