Apple have finally released pictures of the iPod mobile phone. It will be released in the US in June priced around £250.
Wednesday, January 10, 2007
The highly anticipated iPod mobile phone was announced at the annual Macworld Expo in San Francisco last night. The iPod mobile uses a large touch screen rather than conventional buttons. It uses a patented technology called ‘multi touch’ meaning you can use your touch screen with your fingers with no need for a pointer. The iPhone’s full QWERTY soft keyboard has predictive text, so it prevents and corrects mistakes while your typing. The touch screen is designed to ignore unintended touches and it also has a proximity sensor that automatically turns off the touch sensor and deactivates the screen when the phone is raised to the users face. For example when you make a call your cheek will not activate anything by mistake on your touch screen.
The iPod mobile also includes a widescreen iPod which will allow you to watch all your content on a 3.5 inch widescreen display, and you can also sync your content from your iTunes library on your PC or Mac.
Browsing the internet on the iPod mobile phone uses OS X operating system. This uses Safari web browser and also includes built in versions of Google and Yahoo. You can read a web page whilst at the same time downloading your email in the background over Wi-Fi or EDGE. It’s worth nothing that the EDGE technology will need to be re-engineered for the UK market to ensure it works with high speed networks.
A slightly disappointing feature is the 2 mega pixel camera. Taking into account that the iPod mobile will only be released in the UK in Q4 2007, we will then likely be seeing 3 mega pixel cameras in mid range mobile phones and up to 4 – 5 mega pixel cameras in top range mobile phones.
Two models will be available, a 4Gb, and a 8Gb version. Last but not least the iPod mobile phone is just 11.6mm thick. This is only slightly thicker than the Motorola L6!
An interesting point is that Apple don’t actually own the iPhone trade mark, but Cisco do. This is sure to cause a lengthy legal battle which could end with Apple or Cisco being ordered to stop using the iPhone name in the future.
