About Apple iPhone Xr - Review, Specs + more

The iPhone Xr is the most impressive of all the iPhones launched lately - and not because of the strength of the tech — it's simply undeniable that the more expensive iPhone 11 is slightly ahead in a lot of areas — but does what you're 'saving' by going for this model far outweigh what you're losing? If you want a new iPhone on contract, check this one out first; with that, let's get our review underway...

Summary of contents:
  1. What sets the Apple iPhone Xr apart?
  2. No 3D Touch on the iPhone XR
  3. The king of photo-taking
  4. Features at a glance:
  5. iPhone XR goes further
  6. XR: the oneCompare verdict
  7. How much does iPhone XR cost on contract?

What sets the Apple iPhone Xr apart?

iPhone X🅁 really is up to the most demanding of requirements - and so it should be. This is provided by the built-in 6-core processor Apple A12 Bionic as well as main memory in cooperation with the operating software iOS 12. The display diagonal of the useful dual-SIM phones is a remarkable 6.1".

This fact makes it less manageable in your hand; but videos , web pages and even the new menu are displayed very clearly thanks mainly to these dimensions. You can expect awesome Full HD picture quality to playback your videos and games thanks to the high-spec resolution of 1792 x 828 pixels.

In addition, because of the so-called IPS technology, you can see intense colours from all angles.

However, there are some changes to make the iPhone XR cheaper than it's bigger brother, the iPhone XS. The cost difference is about £200 cheaper here, so what's changed?

Compared to the iPhone XS, the iPhone XR is downgraded in a number of ways to hit that lower price point. That said, there are a number of key features that are the same: iOS 12 is the operating system that runs things, and it’s backed up by the wildly-powerful A12 Bionic chipset inside.

The notch contains all the same front-facing cameras and sensors as the iPhone XS, and the dual speakers still face the same way when pumping out sound.

No 3D Touch on the iPhone XR

There’s one way to know if you use a feature on an iPhone, and that’s to take it away, and see if you miss it. Anyone coming from a later-series Apple handset will have had access to 3D Touch, where pressing the screen harder opens menus or activates different features in apps.

This feature has been removed for the iPhone XR, presumably to save money – instead you have to do a ‘long press’ to do the same thing. So if you ever accessed shortcuts by pushing harder on an app, or opened the torch with a harder prod on the lock screen… well, that’s gone.

The king of photo-taking

With the built-in camera you can shoot stunning photos - iPhone XR is equipped with a total of 2 cameras. The resolution of the main camera of 12 MP shoots detailed, high-resolution images, which are also displayed on large monitors or printed products. However, the generated footage needs a bit more space.

The optical image stabiliser ensures less blurry shots - Mashable tested it here. Via the video shooting mode, you can shoot movies in 4K quality. The front camera has a resolution of 7 MP. With it you take good quality self-portraits or video calls with Skype.

Unlike many other mobile phones, Apple models have vendor-specific interfaces. Therefore, the data transfer of the iPhone X🅁 works by means of the Lightning connection. You can also connect headphones or headphones via Lightning or Bluetooth. An Internet connection can be established in the home network thanks to the WLAN ac interface as well as on the road via the latest, superfast 4G network.

Features at a glance:

  • Fingerprint sensor for easy unlock
  • Resistant/tough phone casing
  • At the cutting edge of 2019 technology
  • Excellent video recording quality in UHD
  • LTE-capable Dual sim card reader
  • Content clearly visible thanks to the bulky 6.1-inch Retina display
  • Great performance, even with complex apps

Thanks to dual-SIM technology, you couls use 2x SIM cards from different network providers in the same device. For example, you can make one-to-one phone calls while taking advantage of another, or using the phone for both personal and business purposes.

iPhone XR goes further

Calling time up to 25 hours is no problem. A power supply can not only be done by power adapter - optionally, the iPhone XR has Qi technology even wireless charging. Additional security for your data is provided by the integrated fingerprint sensor: only your own fingerprint unlocks the phone.

Overall, the iPhone's external skin is more durable because it is protected from dust and water.

XR: the oneCompare verdict

Apple's colourful iPhone Xr is characterised by its robust workmanship and a powerful battery with fast charging function. The TrueDepth camera allows detailed recordings, which you can subsequently edit by means of depth control.

The internal memory of the smartphone, however, is not expandable. If you want to save many apps, pictures and videos, it is worth opting for one of the two larger variants. Overall, it's a great phone and in our opinion the best iPhone on the market today.

If you aren't sure between this and the equivalent Galaxy S model, and are considering a switch to Android, then the Galaxy S10e by our reckoning is the equivalent model.

The iPhone XR is still a great buy, even if it has been replaced by the iPhone 11 range eg the iPhone 11 Pro or 11 Pro Max. But those cost about £500 more respectively than this model, and given that the iPhone XR is still available on contract and outright, Apple haven't yet discontinued it, so most people will struggle to justify the additional costs.

How much does iPhone XR cost on contract?

Paying monthly is often the most cost-effective way to buy a new iPhone, and the XR is no different. Even though it's the cheapest of the X 2018 models, it'll still set you back about £30 a month for a 24 month contract.

The cost of the handset alone if purchased outright from a store is about £600 so this explains why the monthly price for the iPhone XR is not exactly cheap. However it is the cheapest of all the models and almost half the price of the iPhone XS Max.

Is SIM Only better for iPhone Xr?

Generally speaking, SIM Only is cheaper but you don't have the benefit of paying monthly for your handset like the Apple iPhone Xr, so it only really makes financial sense if you are in the fortunate position to be able to buy the handset outright first. Yes, it works out cheaper overall if you can do that, at least nearly always - but it is really a personal preference. Find out more about SIM Only deals here

Not sure which mobile network to go for?

oneCompare completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Apple iPhone Xr ee contract or a Apple iPhone Xr Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear - oneCompare is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Apple iPhone Xr contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signals across all major mobile networks within the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, in their recent research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time - that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 43394 Apple iPhone Xr deals, our cheapest Apple iPhone Xr deal over the entire life of the contract is £672.00, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

oneCompare's team have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM-free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Apple iPhone Xr SIM Free phone would cost to buy i.e. this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront.

The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Apple iPhone Xr handset cost. You're now in a great position to compare this cost to a regular Apple iPhone Xr Contract.

Did you know? You can compare SIM only deals from Sky, o2, Vodafone and all the other networks with oneCompare!

Pro Tip: A great way to save a few extra pounds when comparing SIM Only contracts, is to consider purchasing a pre owned Apple iPhone Xr phone from the likes of MusicMagpie who provide warranties and flexible handset payment terms.
