About Google Pixel 4 XL - Review, Specs + more

After numerous leaks and even a rumoured review embargo, Google's new Pixel 4 XL smartphones are now here: specifically there are two, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL. Both smartphones have been unveiled by Google recently in New York and pre-orders are now possible in the UK. So, what has changed from the previous generation - the Pixel 3A?

Essentially, sside from having a bigger screen, battery and body size, the Pixel 4 XL is pretty much the same phone as the Pixel 4 – they have the same specs, cameras and software. For the first time, Google has installed not just one, but two camera sensors on the back. how this changes the setup, and what other new features the Pixel phones bring, we describe in our early preview here - we will update this review after we get to test out the Pixel 4 ourselves in our hands-on.

Pixel 4 XL - Design

The Pixel phones are pretty much known for their classic design ethos witnessed most clearly on the back, consisting of part glossy and part frosted glass, but that's been replaced with the Pixel 4. Google has adopted with these models a uniform glass back, which is available in either black, white or more recently orange, which Google calls "Oh So Orange". It doesn't actually appear to be that "Oh So", though - a website here has tested the orange colour against other famous orange items, and it looks rather dull in comparison. That said, we love the new orange colours available on handsets coming out right now and it certainly makes a change from millennial pink / rose gold.

The aluminum frame is black on all models. The back feels very high quality in the hand, as per our testing at the Google event. While the black version shines, the other two variants are dull due to a special processing - similar to Apple's new iPhone 11 series.

Speaking of Apple, not only the matte glass back, the camera arrangement is reminiscent of the design of the new iOS phones from Apple too. There appears to be a lot of copying between brands lately.

A selection of new features

As we said in the intro, for the first time, Google has installed not one, but two camera sensors in the upper left corner and arranged them in a slightly protruding, rounded square. The similarity is not to be overlooked, even if the iPhone 11 Pro Max counts one extra sensor. A fingerprint sensor that used to be found on the back of the Pixel phones is now missing -  Google waives the fingerprint unlock  function now, and like Apple since the iPhone X  - it's now relying on facial recognition.

As Google fans will remember, the Pixel 3 XL had to put up with a lot of criticism with its rather large Notch, so this time around, Google decided to abolish it altogether. The upper edge of the screen is noticeably wider than the lower one, because in addition to the 8-megapixel front camera, a new mini-radar system that uses infrared sensors is located here. The 3D face recognition should be particularly fast and secure but so far there are few tests available.

Now with radar?!

So how does this work? In the first demo we saw, the Pixel 4 XL unlocks very quickly - even if you pick it up from the table, it unlocks. Very cool. Basically, the radar recognises the movement of the hand and prepares the sensors for unlocking. We're not quite sure why other phones haven't added this function before as it sounds so simple.

In addition, this new fandangled radar allows gesture control from the air, which is especially useful if you can not touch the smartphone i.e. if you have wet or dirty hands. The controller works reliably and should work better than smartphones that do this with a camera-based technology (for example the LG G8s ThinQ). According to Google, this technique called "Motion Sense" is still in its infancy, but we expect loads of apps to utilise this feature over the coming months and years.

Pixel 4 XL in the UK - Pricing, Contract cost

The Pixel 4 XL launch price in the UK is expected to be about £799, but this may change. You can already pre-order the Pixel 4 or the Pixel 4 XL on a monthly contract, and your shiny new Pixel phone will arrive on launch day.

What's more, for a limited time only, you can also get a Chromebook FREE  when you pre-order from Carphone Warehouse, Mobiles.co.uk, EE, Vodafone, ID Mobile on a monthly contract, or if you prefer to buy outright then we are told this deal will also apply there.

Is SIM Only better for Pixel 4 XL?

Generally speaking, SIM Only is cheaper but you don't have the benefit of paying monthly for your handset like the Google Pixel 4 XL, so it only really makes financial sense if you are in the fortunate position to be able to buy the handset outright first. Yes, it works out cheaper overall if you can do that, at least nearly always - but it is really a personal preference. Find out more about SIM Only deals here

Not sure which mobile network to go for?

oneCompare completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Google Pixel 4 XL ee contract or a Google Pixel 4 XL Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear - oneCompare is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Google Pixel 4 XL contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signals across all major mobile networks within the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, in their recent research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time - that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 1340 Google Pixel 4 XL deals, our cheapest Google Pixel 4 XL deal over the entire life of the contract is £105.99, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

oneCompare's team have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM-free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Google Pixel 4 XL SIM Free phone would cost to buy i.e. this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront.

The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Google Pixel 4 XL handset cost. You're now in a great position to compare this cost to a regular Google Pixel 4 XL Contract.

Did you know? You can compare SIM only deals from Sky, o2, Vodafone and all the other networks with oneCompare!

Pro Tip: A great way to save a few extra pounds when comparing SIM Only contracts, is to consider purchasing a pre owned Google Pixel 4 XL phone from the likes of MusicMagpie who provide warranties and flexible handset payment terms.
