About P20 - Review, Specs + more

With the P20, Huawei offers a high-end alternative to the Apple and Samsung top dogs. This 4G smartphone has a bright display and — compared to its predecessor — a much improved camera. You can use it comfortably even with smaller hands. We're big fans here at oneCOMPARE, so let's get reviewing...

Leica lenses and great AI

The highlight of the P20 is most definitely the rear camera with 12- and 20 megapixel lenses from Leica. According to TechRadar the cameras produces sharp, colourful and detailed pictures and they reckon it is even better than the cameras of the much more expensive Galaxy S9 and even iPhone X.

Only the Google Pixel 3 takes even better pictures.

Staying on the camera: compared to its predecessor (naturally called the P10), the P20 creates significantly less photographic noise. Instead, you get bright and high-contrast photos that'll make you look like a pro. The front camera has a whopping 24 megapixels, but has to fight with edge blur and distorted colours. For this, the user has many camera functions including an artificial intelligence (AI) available.

Motifs are automatically detected and placed in one of 19 scenarios. In addition, the system detects which movements will be executed soon. This contributes to better image stabilisation with 4K video recordings.

Bright, sharp display

The 5.8-inch Full HD display is almost frameless and comes with the notch that was famously removed from the iPhone X. This black hole at the top houses the front camera, speakers and sensors.

With the fingerprint reader on the front or via face recognition you can unlock the IPS display. It is in terms of brightness extremely good, but still remains behind top models.

Compared to the P20 Pro, the screen is 100 candela per square metre brighter, which makes it easier to read in the sun. The optics are characterised by a stainless steel frame and a polished glass back. To avoid fingerprints and slipping out of the hand, you can use the enclosed protective cover.

What are the alternatives to the P20?

The P20 technically positions itself between the slimmed-down version P20 Lite and the more expensive P20 Pro. Compared to the Lite version, it has a larger internal memory of 128 GB, instead of 64 GB , and greater battery capacity - which by the way holds 3400 mAh, making it 400 mAh more than the Lite model and with the inclusive fast charging technology this recharges it completely within 90 minutes. However, wireless charging has curiously been omitted.

The Pro version has a larger screen (6.1 inches), 6GB of RAM instead of 4GB and a 4000mAh battery.

The Huawei P20 has an RRP of £349 placing it close to the upper price range. It is however much cheaper than the Pro premium model and has a first-class camera, simple operating concept, good display

Our tester found sound disadvantages: it comes with no memory expansion and there is no headphone jack.

Not sure which Mobile network to go for?

OneCompare completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Huawei P20 ee contract or a Huawei P20 Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear - OneCompare is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Huawei P20 contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signal across all major mobile networks across the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, In their latest research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time - that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 453 Huawei P20 deals, our cheapest Huawei P20 deal over the entire life of the contract is £276.00, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

We have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile Networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Huawei P20 SIM free phone would cost, this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront. The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile Networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Huawei P20 handset cost. You're now in a great position to compare this cost to a regular Huawei P20 Contract.

Pro Tip: A great way to save a few extra pounds when comparing SIM Only contract is to consider purchasing a pre owned Huawei P20 phone from the likes of Music Magpie who provide warranties and flexible handset payment terms.
