About 8.1 - Review, Specs + more

The Nokia 8.1 runs well, has a long-lasting battery and supports Bluetooth 5.0. Don't forget it always has several high-resolution cameras giving you time to perfect those perfect shots. The Nokia 8.1 is really just a fun little phone and wants you to enjoy yourself. Let's see if it's worth considering over a Galaxy S7 or similar iPhone model...

Well-equipped, expandable storage

The 8.1 is a phablet from Finnish giants Nokia - now making phones again. Its display is 6.18 inches tall and almost rimless / borderless, and frankly looks rather stunning. All the hallmarks of previous NOKIA design have been removed however, and this does look like every other phone or phablet on the market at the minute, sadly.

But back to that wonderful screen - it occupies almost the entire front. That is why it is still compact despite the large display. The screen offers Full HD + and delivers a real bite with 2246 × 1080 pixels always a sharp and detailed picture. The processor is a Snapdragon 710 processor with 8 cores and up to 2.2 GHz clock frequency - not exactly underpowered!

Nokia 8.1 - At a glance

  • Swish-looking design
  • Superb dual-camera setup
  • One of the best phone screens around
  • Not waterproof
  • Not the cheapest

Together with 4 GB of RAM and an Adreno 616 graphics unit, even demanding tasks and games are there for the taking. The internal memory is fixed at a generous 64 GB but you can expand it with a microSD memory card up to 400 GB. The battery provides 3500mAh and lasts for up to 2 days according to the manufacturer.

The Nokia handset supports LTE and WLAN.ac, as well as Bluetooth 5.0 for wireless connection to a notebook. A fingerprint sensor on the back protects the device against unauthorised access.

A quick mention that the Nokia 7.1 has a lot of these features and although it's an older model, it retails at a much lower price. Compare pay monthly deals on the Nokia 7.1 here.

Nokia 8.1: Modern dual cameras

The Nokia 8.1 is all about photography, according to the brochure, and therefore has a powerful camera system with ZEISS optics in its repertoire. It is a dual camera: on the back there's a 12-megapixel resolution camera for photos, and on the side is a second 13-megapixel for correction - it works a treat, and this combination is responsible for the depth measurement and stunning bokeh effects.

A fast autofocus and optical image stabilisation prevent you from taking blurry photos, and you can record videos in Ultra HD. ExpertReviews were mightily impressed with this feature, too.

On the front there is the less powerful camera, which promises 20 megapixels for high-resolution selfies and video chats.

Nokia 8.1: Android Pie is here

The Nokia 8.1 has a modern operating system and comes preinstalled with the latest version, Android 9 Pie. But in all likelihood it'll not remain that way, with Android One / Android 10  updates being guaranteed by NOKIA for this model in the future.

The Android One upgrade promises a pure, unmodified mobile OS, which Google provides quickly with updates and the problem with delayed or missing updates should be eliminated. The update promises 2 major operating system updates and monthly security updates over a period of several years - wow!

The oneCompare Verdict on the Nokia 8.1

The Nokia 8.1 has a large display and runs smoothly. Its memory is easily expandable and the large battery provides a long battery life. Photo and video fans get their money's worth with the dual camera system for high-resolution photos and videos. The Android One update - now available in the UK - promises regular and timely updates and a host of new features.

If you're looking for something by Nokia that is a little different, then you can't really go wrong with the 8.1.

How much does the Nokia 8.1 cost in the UK?

8.1 deals: How long does delivery take?

Is SIM Only better for 8.1?

Generally speaking, SIM Only is cheaper but you don't have the benefit of paying monthly for your handset like the Nokia 8.1, so it only really makes financial sense if you are in the fortunate position to be able to buy the handset outright first. Yes, it works out cheaper overall if you can do that, at least nearly always - but it is really a personal preference. Find out more about SIM Only deals here

Not sure which mobile network to go for?

oneCompare completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Nokia 8.1 ee contract or a Nokia 8.1 Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear - oneCompare is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Nokia 8.1 contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signals across all major mobile networks within the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, in their recent research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time - that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 737 Nokia 8.1 deals, our cheapest Nokia 8.1 deal over the entire life of the contract is £408.00, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

oneCompare's team have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM-free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Nokia 8.1 SIM Free phone would cost to buy i.e. this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront.

The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Nokia 8.1 handset cost. You're now in a great position to compare this cost to a regular Nokia 8.1 Contract.

Did you know? You can compare SIM only deals from Sky, o2, Vodafone and all the other networks with oneCompare!

Pro Tip: A great way to save a few extra pounds when comparing SIM Only contracts, is to consider purchasing a pre owned Nokia 8.1 phone from the likes of MusicMagpie who provide warranties and flexible handset payment terms.
