About Nokia 9 PureView - Review, Specs + more

The Nokia 9 PureView is a slightly different take on the camera setup found elsewhere: this time with no less than 5 Zeiss lenses, and that's a record we've not seen in other brands. Otherwise, the rest of the smartphone offers solid mobile technology and is fairly affordable too. So should we all be buying the 9 PureView? Let's find out.

Summary of Nokia 9 PureView:
  1. Nokia 9 PureView: Five in One
  2. Nokia 9 PureView: Native black and white
  3. Nokia 9 PureView: Good picture quality
  4. Should I buy a Nokia 9 PureView?

Nokia 9 PureView: Five in One

Nokia's latest flagship, the 9 PureView , enters the already rather packed-looking race with a multi-lens module called Penta Camera. As the name implies, there are a grand total of no less than 5x Zeiss optics on the back. Why does the perfect symmetry work so well here, if there's a total of 7 openings, you ask? Quite simple: In the remaining 2 round elements an LED flash light and an ambient light sensor have been carefully integrated by the Finnish giant, too. It's a great idea.

In order to protect the lenses of the main camera from dust, splashes and other issues, an impact-resistant Gorilla 5 glass covers the entire surface of the aluminum housing (IP67 certification).

Behind every 28 mm lens  - each incidentally with a bright f1.8 aperture -  is a 12-megapixel sensor. When recording, all 5 units will be active simultaneously. The smartphone's clever firmware then merges the frames into one high-resolution recording. According to the manufacturer, the advantage of the multi-camera setup here is higher photosensitivity; the greater dynamic range and the greater depth of field.

Nokia 9 PureView: Native black and white

Of the 5 cameras. 3 have monochrome sensors, so you can also forego any post-processing native black and white shot processing now, it's all done for you. If you want to keep all editing options open for the recordings, it pays to shoot in RAW format this reviewer noted.

Meanwhile, the 9 PureView also comes with Adobe Camera RAW plugin support -  so fans of Lightroom will find their often niche editing requirements well catered for here, surprisingly.

If you select the Pro Camera mode for the camera control, the image results should be able to be influenced in a more targeted manner. In addition to the white balance and the ISO value, the shutter speed (including long exposures) can be set manually - up to 10 seconds.  HDR images are also possible for increased contrast.

By deliberately setting the focus point here in post-production, the manufacturer promises impressive images with an bokeh effect. It's a clever setup and means you don't need to spend as long taking perfect photos.

Nokia 9 PureView: Good picture quality

The camera concept promises high resolution photos and according to the early reviews on YouTube this works well. What is missing, however, is an integrated image stabiliser that minimises the risk of camera shake in low light.

In addition, as said above, Nokia uses a uniform focal length for all 5 cameras. As a result,  this does kind of limit you, and we happen to prefer the setup offered by the Samsung Galaxy S10 or the Huawei Mate 20 Pro which are more freeing.

Should I buy a Nokia 9 PureView?

The Nokia 9 PureView is a solid luxury-class smartphone at a fair price. However, by not using the current trendy Notch design and the latest processor generation, it is not always up to date when compared to flashier cousins. Some users may also miss a micro SD card slot for more storage capacity.

it also comes with Android One as standard, a great O/S by most measures.

The standout here is the camera though - Instagram fans will love it, and it's an emerging market, where only the Honor Play really has gone before it.

It's also fairly affordable on contract in the UK  - with all networks offering deals at time of writing, from only £15.99 a month on a 12 month contract.

Also consider from Nokia the 8.1 and the 7.1
