About Nokia 9 PureView - Review, Specs + more

The Nokia 9 PureView is a slightly different take on the camera setup found elsewhere: this time with no less than 5 Zeiss lenses, and that's a record we've not seen in other brands. Otherwise, the rest of the smartphone offers solid mobile technology and is fairly affordable too. So should we all be buying the 9 PureView? Let's find out.

Summary of Nokia 9 PureView:
  1. Nokia 9 PureView: Five in One
  2. Nokia 9 PureView: Native black and white
  3. Nokia 9 PureView: Good picture quality
  4. Should I buy a Nokia 9 PureView?

Nokia 9 PureView: Five in One

Nokia's latest flagship, the 9 PureView , enters the already rather packed-looking race with a multi-lens module called Penta Camera. As the name implies, there are a grand total of no less than 5x Zeiss optics on the back. Why does the perfect symmetry work so well here, if there's a total of 7 openings, you ask? Quite simple: In the remaining 2 round elements an LED flash light and an ambient light sensor have been carefully integrated by the Finnish giant, too. It's a great idea.

In order to protect the lenses of the main camera from dust, splashes and other issues, an impact-resistant Gorilla 5 glass covers the entire surface of the aluminum housing (IP67 certification).

Behind every 28 mm lens  - each incidentally with a bright f1.8 aperture -  is a 12-megapixel sensor. When recording, all 5 units will be active simultaneously. The smartphone's clever firmware then merges the frames into one high-resolution recording. According to the manufacturer, the advantage of the multi-camera setup here is higher photosensitivity; the greater dynamic range and the greater depth of field.

Nokia 9 PureView: Native black and white

Of the 5 cameras. 3 have monochrome sensors, so you can also forego any post-processing native black and white shot processing now, it's all done for you. If you want to keep all editing options open for the recordings, it pays to shoot in RAW format this reviewer noted.

Meanwhile, the 9 PureView also comes with Adobe Camera RAW plugin support -  so fans of Lightroom will find their often niche editing requirements well catered for here, surprisingly.

If you select the Pro Camera mode for the camera control, the image results should be able to be influenced in a more targeted manner. In addition to the white balance and the ISO value, the shutter speed (including long exposures) can be set manually - up to 10 seconds.  HDR images are also possible for increased contrast.

By deliberately setting the focus point here in post-production, the manufacturer promises impressive images with an bokeh effect. It's a clever setup and means you don't need to spend as long taking perfect photos.

Nokia 9 PureView: Good picture quality

The camera concept promises high resolution photos and according to the early reviews on YouTube this works well. What is missing, however, is an integrated image stabiliser that minimises the risk of camera shake in low light.

In addition, as said above, Nokia uses a uniform focal length for all 5 cameras. As a result,  this does kind of limit you, and we happen to prefer the setup offered by the Samsung Galaxy S10 or the Huawei Mate 20 Pro which are more freeing.

Should I buy a Nokia 9 PureView?

The Nokia 9 PureView is a solid luxury-class smartphone at a fair price. However, by not using the current trendy Notch design and the latest processor generation, it is not always up to date when compared to flashier cousins. Some users may also miss a micro SD card slot for more storage capacity.

it also comes with Android One as standard, a great O/S by most measures.

The standout here is the camera though - Instagram fans will love it, and it's an emerging market, where only the Honor Play really has gone before it.

It's also fairly affordable on contract in the UK  - with all networks offering deals at time of writing, from only £15.99 a month on a 12 month contract.

Is SIM Only better for 9 PureView?

Generally speaking, SIM Only is cheaper but you don't have the benefit of paying monthly for your handset like the Nokia 9 PureView, so it only really makes financial sense if you are in the fortunate position to be able to buy the handset outright first. Yes, it works out cheaper overall if you can do that, at least nearly always - but it is really a personal preference. Find out more about SIM Only deals here

Not sure which mobile network to go for?

oneCompare completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Nokia 9 PureView ee contract or a Nokia 9 PureView Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear - oneCompare is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Nokia 9 PureView contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signals across all major mobile networks within the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, in their recent research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time - that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 764 Nokia 9 PureView deals, our cheapest Nokia 9 PureView deal over the entire life of the contract is £408.00, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

oneCompare's team have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM-free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Nokia 9 PureView SIM Free phone would cost to buy i.e. this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront.

The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Nokia 9 PureView handset cost. You're now in a great position to compare this cost to a regular Nokia 9 PureView Contract.

Did you know? You can compare SIM only deals from Sky, o2, Vodafone and all the other networks with oneCompare!

Pro Tip: A great way to save a few extra pounds when comparing SIM Only contracts, is to consider purchasing a pre owned Nokia 9 PureView phone from the likes of MusicMagpie who provide warranties and flexible handset payment terms.
