About Oppo Reno 10x zoom - Review, Specs + more

Oppo has introduced the new Reno 10x Zoom product family - and although it doesn't actually have 10x optical zoom, that is what the name implies. The Reno lineup focuses on photography, like the Huawei P series such as the P30 Pro. The Oppo Reno features a 6.4-inch FullHD + AMOLED display and the true eye-catcher is a unique and quirky Sharkfin pop-up camera.

Not many people in the UK have heard of OPPO, despite the fact that they're somewhere between the 5th and 6th largest manufacturer of smartphones in the world. So if you're looking for something a little different with bragging rights, should you consider this Chinese manufacturer? Let's find out...

Oppo Reno 10X Zoom - Camera review

The camera, which is a moving part essentially, is equipped with a built-in 16MP selfie camera and on the back there is a dual camera setup with 48MP + 5MP camera sensors. The Oppo Reno 10X Zoom has a built-in NFC chip and the 3765mAh battery supports VOOC 3.0 Fast Charge via USB Type C.

Furthermore, Hi-Res Audio is supported and the phone runs with Oppos's own ColorOS 6.0, based on Android 9.0 Pie.

The Notch-free display of the 10X Zoom has a resolution of 2340x1080 and a pixel density of 402ppi. The large 6.4-inch AMOLED screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 and is truly a full-screen panel with no notch or punch hole for the front camera to spoil it. And it looks pretty impressive.

Size matters

The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is quite a big phone – it’s not actually marketed as the ‘plus-sized’ version of the standard Oppo Reno, but it could well be. Indeed, its body is 162 x 77.2 x 9.3mm, so it’s certainly a big device, especially in terms of its thickness as it ranks among the thickest handsets around.

With this big body comes a big screen – and the phone weighs in at 215g, so it’s one of the heaviest around too, weighing even more than the iPhone XS Max at 208g. This is something you come to realise while you’re using the handset – it never feels too heavy, but you can notice the difference between it and many of the more nimble phones on the market.

The display supports DCI-P3 colours and HDR10 content, as well as an integrated fingerprint sensor under the touch panel. Under the hood, a 64-bit Snapdragon 710 chipset powers the mobile device at up to 2.2GHz, in combination with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and an Adreno 616 GPU.

For mobile gamers, the touch sensitivity and stability of the refresh rate of the display has been improved. The Oppo Reno is available in three variants - 8GB + 256GB, 6GB + 256GB and 6GB + 128GB.

Other 10x Zoom specs

Comparing this Reno 10x Zoom version to the cheaper regular Reno , it has the same popup camera, as well as the same 48 megapixel main camera with f / 1.7 aperture. The secondary 5-megapixel (f / 2.4) depth-of-field camera shoots with bokeh effects and supports both PDAF and autofocus. The motorized shark-fin front camera features a 16-megapixel f / 2.0 aperture and 79.3-degree wide-angle sensor, including soft selfie light. KI Beauty, Front HDR, face detection and front portrait mode are supported.

In addition, Oppo has added a fall detection system, to automatically retract and protect the camera - this all happens within milliseconds - as tested here in this review. Video recording is possible with up to 4K 30fps with electronic stabilisation (EIS).

Oppo Reno battery review

The Oppo Reno 10X Zoom has a large built-in battery with 3,765 mAh capacity. The battery is charged via the USB-C port with VOOC 3.0 fast charging technology.

In addition, there are Dual 4G +, NFC, Bluetooth v5.0, which supports SBC, AAC, aptX HD and LDAX. Other specifications include Wi-Fi 2.4G, Wi-Fi 5.1G, Wi-Fi 5.8G and Wi-Fi display. The Oppo Reno Standard Edition also comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack (it's nice that OPPO kept this) and supports OTG data transfer. Navigation is supported by GPS / AGPS, Glonass, Beidou and Galileo.

The oneCOMPARE verdict

The Oppo Reno 10x Zoom is a lovely looking phone – between its slender, flat look, asymmetrical pop-up section and delicate back colours, it looks great – and, surprisingly for a Chinese smartphone with a unique UI, its software is good to look at too. It is however a slow UI and this becomes slightly frustrating.

The device also has a great camera, impressive processing power, and a battery that’ll give you no problems – it’s hard to find a fault with this phone if you're prepared to take a chance on the Oppo brand. You might have trouble with its hefty weight, or its large size, but if you’re looking for a large device this is one of the best you can buy.

It is also quite cheap, comparatively. The price for the Oppo Reno 10x Zoom in the UK is about £25 a month on pay monthly.
