About Reno - Review, Specs + more

Oppo has introduced the new Reno product family. The Reno lineup focuses on photography, like the Huawei P series. The Oppo Reno 5G features a 6.4-inch FHD + AMOLED display and the true eye-catcher is a unique Sharkfin pop-up camera.

The camera part is equipped with a built-in 16MP selfie camera and on the back there is a dual camera setup with 48MP + 5MP camera sensors. The Oppo Reno has a built-in NFC chip and the 3765mAh battery supports VOOC 3.0 Fast Charge via USB Type-C, as per this review.

Furthermore, Hi-Res Audio is supported and the phone runs with Oppos's own ColorOS 6.0, based on Android 9.0 Pie.

The Notch-free display of the Standard Edition has a resolution of 2340x1080 and a pixel density of 402ppi. The large 6.4-inch AMOLED screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 6 and is truly a full-screen panel with no notch or punch hole for the front camera. The display supports DCI-P3 colors and HDR10 content, as well as an integrated fingerprint sensor under the touch panel.

Under the bonnet

Under the casing, a 64-bit Snapdragon 710 chipset powers the mobile device at up to 2.2GHz, in combination with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and an Adreno 616 GPU. For mobile gamers, the touch sensitivity and stability of the refresh rate of the display has been improved. The Oppo Reno is available in three variants - 8GB + 256GB, 6GB + 256GB and 6GB + 128GB.

Compared to the Oppo Reno 10x zoom version, the cheaper Reno Standard Edition has the same popup camera, as well as the same 48 megapixel main camera with f / 1.7 aperture. The secondary 5-megapixel (f / 2.4) depth-of-field camera shoots with bokeh effects and supports both PDAF and autofocus. The motorized shark-fin front camera features a 16-megapixel f / 2.0 aperture and 79.3-degree wide-angle sensor, including soft selfie light. KI Beauty, Front HDR, face detection and front portrait mode are supported.

Uber selfies

The motorised pop-up selfie cam lasts for over five years, provided that module is taken out of the case 100 times a day. In addition, Oppo has added a fall detection to automatically retract and protect the camera. Video recording is possible with up to 4K 30fps with electronic stabilization (EIS).

In the UK, the Oppo Reno 5G has a large built-in battery with 3,765 mAh capacity. The battery is charged via the USB-C port with VOOC 3.0 fast charging technology. In addition, there are Dual 4G +, NFC, Bluetooth v5.0, which supports SBC, AAC, aptX HD and LDAX. Other specifications include Wi-Fi 2.4G, Wi-Fi 5.1G, Wi-Fi 5.8G and Wi-Fi display.

The Oppo Reno also comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack and supports OTG data transfer. Navigation is supported by GPS / AGPS, Glonass, Beidou and Galileo. The Oppo Reno runs on ColorOS 6, which is based on Android 9 Pie.

Our Verdict on the OPPO Reno

The OPPO Reno is a great phone, although some people will struggle with the relatively unknown brand it is growing every day in the UK and before long we suspect will be a household name like Huawei. Who had heard of them even 5 years ago?

A similar phone to consider at the same price point is the P30 Pro by Huawei.

Not sure which Mobile network to go for?

OneCompare completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Oppo Reno ee contract or a Oppo Reno Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear - OneCompare is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Oppo Reno contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signal across all major mobile networks across the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, In their latest research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time - that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 436 Oppo Reno deals, our cheapest Oppo Reno deal over the entire life of the contract is £435.99, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

We have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile Networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Oppo Reno SIM free phone would cost, this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront. The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile Networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Oppo Reno handset cost. You're now in a great position to compare this cost to a regular Oppo Reno Contract.

Pro Tip: A great way to save a few extra pounds when comparing SIM Only contract is to consider purchasing a pre owned Oppo Reno phone from the likes of Music Magpie who provide warranties and flexible handset payment terms.
