About Samsung Galaxy A51 - Review, Specs + more

Samsung Galaxy A51

Great display, decent equipment and an affordable price well under £300. With this recipe, the Samsung Galaxy A50 blossomed into one of Samsung’s bestsellers in 2019. And now at the beginning of January 2020, the manufacturer has released its successor: the Galaxy A51. Does it have what it takes to be the next successful model in Samsung's Galaxy A series?

Samsung Galaxy A51 - More display

At first glance, the Galaxy A51 stands out. The screen has grown compared to the Galaxy A50, not only in the diagonal (from 6.4 to 6.5 inches), but also in the usable area. Because instead of a notch being removed from the usable screen, the front camera is housed in a tiny hole at the top of the screen, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S10. This design is called Samsung Infinity-O-Display. The resolution has remained roughly the same (Full HD + with 1080x2340 pixels), a high-contrast Super-AMOLED is still used. This technology ensures strong colors and impressive contrasts - and a great impression in the practical test, like the screen of the predecessor. Compared to top models like the Galaxy S10, the display frames are still thick, but the design looks more modern without the old-fashioned camera notch.

Galaxy A51: Quadruple camera with macro & 48MP

A quadruple camera is installed on the back of the smartphone, whose resolution is significantly higher than that of the A50: The main camera works with a 48 megapixel / MP sensor (A50: 25 MP), but the aperture is weaker (f2.0 instead of f1.7 on the A50). However, in low light, the 48 MP sensor combines four MP each to exploit this more, so that an optimized 12 MP photo comes out. In the dark, the quality may turn out to be better than the A50 despite the weaker aperture. In the practical test, the camera made a positive impression when the lighting was good, but when there was insufficient light, noise could be seen on the images.

The ultra wide camera, which works with 8 MP in the A50, now uses 12 MP in the A51. We can only hope that the photo quality of the corresponding photos has increased, because the camera on the A50 wasn’t really that great when compared to that of the Galaxy S10. The fourth camera is new: For the first time, as in the Samsung Galaxy A71, a macro camera is used. It has a resolution of 5 MP. The possibilities of the macro mode were appealing in the practical test; they are probably fun, especially when shooting nature. However, you should ensure proper lighting, since photos in dim rooms can be prone to showing strong noise.

Samsung Galaxy A51: CPU, RAM, memory

The Galaxy A51 is available internationally in three memory variants: with either 4, 6 or 8 gigabytes (GB) of working memory (RAM) and 64 or 128 GB of device memory. Samsung chose the in-house Exynos 9611 (A50: Exynos 9610) as the processor, which is also in the Samsung Galaxy M30s. When it comes to speed, the A51 won’t set any world records, but the pace is consistently good all of the time. The 4,000mAh battery is about average for a phone in this league. Fast charging is also possible via USB-C is on phone.

Samsung Galaxy A51: price, release, colors

The Galaxy A51 with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage has been available since mid-January 2020, at a price hovering around the £350 mark. It’s available in there colours - black, white and blue. The Galaxy A51 is quite expensive as it’s fairly new to the market. However as soon as the price reaches the £300 mark (which it should do in a few months’ time), it is probably on the right lines to become a bestselling smartphone. And rightly so - the design has been optimised, the display has grown slightly, and it’s generally a decent improvement on its predecessor. It remains to be seen whether the camera is convincing enough, but it’s still a good camera nonetheless. The general speed could be improved, so if that’s important to you then you may be better off looking at the Samsung Galaxy A71. If that’s too big and expensive, take a look at the predecessor Samsung Galaxy A50, which can be had for about £230 now.

Galaxy A51 deals: How long does delivery take?

Is SIM Only better for Galaxy A51?

Generally speaking, SIM Only is cheaper but you don't have the benefit of paying monthly for your handset like the Samsung Galaxy A51, so it only really makes financial sense if you are in the fortunate position to be able to buy the handset outright first. Yes, it works out cheaper overall if you can do that, at least nearly always - but it is really a personal preference. Find out more about SIM Only deals here

Not sure which mobile network to go for?

oneCompare completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Samsung Galaxy A51 ee contract or a Samsung Galaxy A51 Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear - oneCompare is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Samsung Galaxy A51 contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signals across all major mobile networks within the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, in their recent research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time - that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 5433 Samsung Galaxy A51 deals, our cheapest Samsung Galaxy A51 deal over the entire life of the contract is £439.99, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

oneCompare's team have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM-free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Samsung Galaxy A51 SIM Free phone would cost to buy i.e. this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront.

The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Samsung Galaxy A51 handset cost. You're now in a great position to compare this cost to a regular Samsung Galaxy A51 Contract.

Did you know? You can compare SIM only deals from Sky, o2, Vodafone and all the other networks with oneCompare!

Pro Tip: A great way to save a few extra pounds when comparing SIM Only contracts, is to consider purchasing a pre owned Samsung Galaxy A51 phone from the likes of MusicMagpie who provide warranties and flexible handset payment terms.
