About Samsung Galaxy S20 - Review, Specs + more

Samsung presents its new smartphone flagship - the shiny, dazzling and brilliant Galaxy S20. The standard model doesn't have 5G but not everyone needs that anyway. Read on to find out which version you should plump for...

Samsung Galaxy S20 - Features

  • 6.2-inch display with WQHD + resolution
  • Main camera with 8K video
  • Dolby Atmos Stereo Speakers

As the new flagship of the Galaxy S series, the S20 continues the design themes of its predecessor the Galaxy S10. The new Infinity-O display offers even narrower edges on the top and bottom edges, which emphasises the slim, strongly rounded side line even more.

Compared to the more expensive Galaxy S20 Plus and S20 Ultra 5G, the standard model has the smallest display. It measures 6.2 inches (15.83 cm) on the diagonal and has an elongated, video ready aspect ratio of 20: 9.

With its WQHD+ resolution of 3200 × 1440 pixels, the Dynamic Amoled touchscreen promises sharp and high-contrast image reproduction, and since the fast frame rate of 120 Hertz is available here then it should allow very smooth scrolling and authentic gaming experiences.

The smartphone supports video formats with a larger HDR10+ contrast range so that you can enjoy films even more intensely. In addition, the stereo speakers optimised by AKG should be able to reproduce Dolby Atmos sound.

Selfie camera for 4K videos

The 10 megapixel front camera is again not hidden behind a classic notch design, which we like. Instead, it is placed in the middle of the upper edge of the display and, together with a fingerprint sensor, is protected by scratch-resistant Gorilla 6 glass (the latest version).

In addition to an auto HDR mode, you can use 4K video - for clarify that offers up to 60 frames per second. Like the front, the back is coated with solid Gorilla 6 glass.

Main camera - whopping 64 megapixel

Compared to the other more expensive S20 variants, the standard version is limited to a rear camera with only 3 lenses.

The main camera with wide-angle optics and optical image stabiliser resolves to a total of 12 megapixels and the sensor is comparatively large with a diagonal measurement/ratio of 1 / 1.76 inches, which promises noise-free results in low light.

The ultra-wide-angle module also has the same resolution, and the third lens in the bundle is an image-stabilised telephoto lens with a 3x hybrid optical zoom and a resolution of 64 megapixels. Due to its high resolution, the 3x magnification should be lossless, but we haven't tested this yet.

In addition, the S20 comes with a 30x digital zoom function, and the 8K video mode should set new quality standards: It films with a maximum of 30 frames per second and uses an action cam video stabilisation for blurred shots.

S20: Top-class performance

A powerful Exynos 990 processor works really well, and comes with IP68 waterproof housing. Together with 8GB of RAM, even complex applications should run without annoying interruptions. But then you would expect that, for a flagship.

The question remains: Do you need to buy the Ultra or Plus version - or is the baseline S20 fine enough for most users? We'd say so, unless you want 5G.

Galaxy S20 Price in UK

The Galaxy S20 launches at an RRP of £899 in the UK. It's not cheap, but then it's a fully featured smartphone and the flagship. We expect the prices to fall, although monthly you can already get it from £19 a month on a 36 month contract.

If you're looking for something cheaper then consider the new Galaxy A71 on pay monthly.

Verdict - Galaxy S20

This version is 4G (LTE) only , so make sure that you're aware of the repercussions of not having 5G in the UK in 2020 and beyond...  If you live in London or a big city you may wish to opt for the 5G version but for most users there's little point as 5G is not widely available yet and probably won't be for a number of years yet...

Anyway, onto the operating system (OS) and under the bonnet:  here Samsung have added an internal memory of 128 GB available for videos, photos, music and apps. In the event that you want to expand it to a maximum of 1TB, a micro SD slot for powerful micro SDXC cards is integrated.

In addition, there is another compartment for dual SIM card operation. if needed...

In contrast to the larger S20 sister models, the standard model with 4000 mAh battery has the smallest, permanently installed battery - the result is at 164g, it is the lightest S20.

Fast charging via a 45W power supply should also be possible, as expected.

Galaxy S20 deals: How long does delivery take?

Is SIM Only better for Galaxy S20?

Generally speaking, SIM Only is cheaper but you don't have the benefit of paying monthly for your handset like the Samsung Galaxy S20, so it only really makes financial sense if you are in the fortunate position to be able to buy the handset outright first. Yes, it works out cheaper overall if you can do that, at least nearly always - but it is really a personal preference. Find out more about SIM Only deals here

Not sure which mobile network to go for?

oneCompare completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Samsung Galaxy S20 ee contract or a Samsung Galaxy S20 Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear - oneCompare is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Samsung Galaxy S20 contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signals across all major mobile networks within the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, in their recent research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time - that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 1429 Samsung Galaxy S20 deals, our cheapest Samsung Galaxy S20 deal over the entire life of the contract is £908.99, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

oneCompare's team have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM-free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Samsung Galaxy S20 SIM Free phone would cost to buy i.e. this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront.

The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Samsung Galaxy S20 handset cost. You're now in a great position to compare this cost to a regular Samsung Galaxy S20 Contract.

Did you know? You can compare SIM only deals from Sky, o2, Vodafone and all the other networks with oneCompare!

Pro Tip: A great way to save a few extra pounds when comparing SIM Only contracts, is to consider purchasing a pre owned Samsung Galaxy S20 phone from the likes of MusicMagpie who provide warranties and flexible handset payment terms.
