About Samsung Galaxy S7 edge - Review, Specs + more

The Galaxy S7 Edge is Samsung's high-performance, once high-end flagship that is now a few years old but arguably still going strong. Whether it's processor performance, graphics, display or design - the S7 Edge convinces in all areas. As you can probably figure out, the S7 "Edge" differs from the normal "S7" model by having a rounded display that runs over the edges - and it looks stunning.

...But it is worth paying extra - or even worth considering at all when the S8 has since replaced it? Let's find out...

Galaxy S7 Edge - It's still a star

Despite the reduced main camera resolution compared to its predecessor from 16 to 12 megapixels, the sensor has been given larger pixels, which is why the performance has been visibly improved under low-light conditions. The camera in oneCOMPARE's own tests gave an excellent impression - the crisp whites and blacks clearly distinguishable.

The speed of the S7 edge itself has also been improved; the Edge menu optimisations are very pleasing. The TouchWiz interface, however, has undergone very few changes and we're not even sure if people use it.  Despite the size of 5.5", the model doesn't feel too big - although if you have smaller hands then you might struggle to reach across that large screen.

Fast performance, even faster

Under the hood of the European version there is an octa-core processor with 2.3 GHz and 1.6 GHz clock rate paired with 4GB of RAM, which is extremely fast. There is no 5G support here, but there is LTE support.

Improvements become clear with regard to the GPU: For example, a liquid cooling system is used which should keep the gaming processor and graphics chip cool. A pre-installed game launcher will block all notifications when playing. Although like with the S7 model, one wished there was a USB -C connection. Also, an internal memory of at least 64 GB would have been a nice bonus. But with the watertight case and the memory card slot, this is one smart cookie.

And then there's that screen. The additional display space not only looks great, but also provides useful new usage features that make the device even more intuitive. The display has an extremely sharp resolution with 2560 x 1440 pixels. Let's look at the screen some more...

Galaxy S7 Edge: Not exactly 'no frills'

The AMOLED technology provides exceptionally strong colours, true black and strong luminosity and is also very energy efficient. This is important because the S7 Edge is powered by a powerful octa-core processor that clocks at 2.3GHz. For demanding smartphone gaming, the processor is also supported by the eight-core Mail T760 graphics chip. ExpertReviews.co.uk were also mightily impressed.

Conclusion - S7 Edge

With the Galaxy S7 Edge, Samsung has responded to customer requests and made sure that the internal memory can be upgraded to up to 200 GB via a microSD card. In addition, it can withstand water for one hour at one metre depth. If you need a premium smartphone for years to come, but don't want to spend a lot, you will be well advised to opt for the S7 Edge.

How much does an S7 edge cost on contract?

Not too much, actually. You can pay £0 upfront (basically, get a 'free' phone) and pay only £25 a month for 18 months. That's a very cheap and affordable way to buy a smartphone that is feature-packed, looks the part, and is very well built. Just watch that screen and don't drop it!

Should I buy a Galaxy S7 edge?

Our advice is most certainly yes. This is a great smartphone and probably our first choice even now if you don't want to spend more than £25 a month on a contract. This smartphone has nearly all of the featuers of newer phones like the S8 that replaced it, and there are so few negatives that it's definitely one to opt for.

If you can afford to spend a bit more, then the Galaxy S8 plus replaced this model and is worthy of your time too - compare deals for the S8 plus now.

Is SIM Only better for Galaxy S7 edge?

Generally speaking, SIM Only is cheaper but you don't have the benefit of paying monthly for your handset like the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge, so it only really makes financial sense if you are in the fortunate position to be able to buy the handset outright first. Yes, it works out cheaper overall if you can do that, at least nearly always - but it is really a personal preference. Find out more about SIM Only deals here

Not sure which mobile network to go for?

oneCompare completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Samsung Galaxy S7 edge ee contract or a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear - oneCompare is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Samsung Galaxy S7 edge contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signals across all major mobile networks within the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, in their recent research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time - that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 100 Samsung Galaxy S7 edge deals, our cheapest Samsung Galaxy S7 edge deal over the entire life of the contract is £431.76, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

oneCompare's team have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM-free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Samsung Galaxy S7 edge SIM Free phone would cost to buy i.e. this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront.

The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Samsung Galaxy S7 edge handset cost. You're now in a great position to compare this cost to a regular Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Contract.

Did you know? You can compare SIM only deals from Sky, o2, Vodafone and all the other networks with oneCompare!

Pro Tip: A great way to save a few extra pounds when comparing SIM Only contracts, is to consider purchasing a pre owned Samsung Galaxy S7 edge phone from the likes of MusicMagpie who provide warranties and flexible handset payment terms.
