About Sony Xperia 10 Plus - Review, Specs + more

With the Sony Xperia 10 Plus, the famed Japanese manufacturer has come up with a new mid-range phone in the 10 range, and this time it has also got a slightly well, larger big brother - enter the Xperia 10 Plus. What's it like to use on an everyday basis? Let's find out...

So to complete the range, just to recap, Sony has recently launched:

At a glance: Xperia 10 Plus

The first thing we noticed: that screen. The 21: 9 format of the display is a real highlight - this movie format is found primarily in streaming services, so the Sony phone offers a new experience movies and series. Otherwise, in the test of the Xperia 10 Plus we can see it fits the mould of the usual middle range qualities: solid performance and good equipment. Camera and battery disappoint somewhat, but we'll come to that later.

Xperia 10 Plus - Design

It's not easy to keep track of Sony's smartphones. So far, the XZ and XA series were the outstanding devices according to our reviewer. But now there is the middle class, the Sony Xperia 10 and Sony Xperia 10 Plus here - not to be confused of course with the new flagship model Sony Xperia 1. Phew!

What makes the "number models" special, according to Sony at least? Well, their displays have the 21: 9 cinema format. This is interesting for movie streaming because, for example, the Netflix app supports the format. Elsewhere, however, the innovation creates a few problems, but more on this  later.

The Xperia 10 Plus is a "mid-range" device in terms of hardware. The retail price is ~£400 in the UK for the handset only and with no contract, which isn't cheap given that there are some obvious corner cuttings going on here: the case of the Sony Xperia 10 Plus seems mediocre. The back looks like aluminum, but is made of plastic, which leaves a somewhat cheap impression.

At the top of the display the Notch is missing, a welcome change; instead it's dominated by a wide frame. At the bottom, however, the display is almost borderless. Overall, the phone seems conspicuously elongated and narrow. If you hold the Xperia 10 Plus in your hand, it sticks out of your hand at the top or bottom.

The feeling of the X10 Plus is generally pleasant thanks to the rounded edges, but the placement of the keys takes some getting used to: the volume can almost only be adjusted by contorting your hand because the keys are located very far down.

For right-handers, the thumb is always on the side of the frame mounted fingerprint sensor. The processing of the device is good, even if the transition between display and frame has a clear edge. Overall, the design is pretty standard but functional: a large, angular block and according to some of the reviews must certainly be a matter of taste. It's a bit of a Marmite product.

Our Verdict on the Xperia 10 Plus

The feature list of the Sony Xperia 10 Plus is quite consise, nay acceptable, for a mid-range phone and loses a few points only due to the lack of dust and water protection. Otherwise it's pretty standard fare here.

A few other points: the Sony has both a USB type C connections as well as a separate headphone socket.  The obligatory fingerprint sensor is located in the side of the frame and is thus quite narrow.

From the 64 GB of internal memory for the user around 47 GB is available and it's entirely plausible to extend this without issue. In the dedicated microSDslot,  users can add memory cards up to 512 GB; the two slots of the dual-SIM function remain so free. The pop-out golder with the three slots, however, takes some getting used to: unlike most mobile phones, it can be opened with a fingernail and then you have a fairly fragile-looking component in your hand.

So should you buy one? Here are the alternatives to consider: Huawei P20, Samsung Galaxy S8, or even the iPhone 8.

Sony Xperia 10 Plus review: Price and competition

Obviously, these upgrades will make a slightly bigger dent on your wallet. Should you decide to pick up the Xperia 10 Plus rather than the basic model, it’ll set you back £399 – a £50 price jump. That’s not too much of an increase considering the Xperia 10 Plus’ long list of improvements as detailed above. If you're looking for a Sony Xperia smartphone for 2019 then you can't go wrong with the 'Plus' version - it's just infinitely better.

Is SIM Only better for Xperia 10 Plus?

Generally speaking, SIM Only is cheaper but you don't have the benefit of paying monthly for your handset like the Sony Xperia 10 Plus, so it only really makes financial sense if you are in the fortunate position to be able to buy the handset outright first. Yes, it works out cheaper overall if you can do that, at least nearly always - but it is really a personal preference. Find out more about SIM Only deals here

Not sure which mobile network to go for?

oneCompare completely gets it, it's not easy trying to understand the differences of each mobile network operator. Is o2 any better than Vodafone for this smartphone, when it comes to coverage? Or worse? It's a real minefield. Another example, which is better? A Sony Xperia 10 Plus ee contract or a Sony Xperia 10 Plus Tesco Mobile contract?

The reality is, it can make a huge difference to your satifaction with the overall product. Who wants to have cruddy download speeds? But never fear - oneCompare is here. Don't forget to check our latest Blog posts below.

Before you decide to buy a contract or handset, it's important to know if you'll get a signal. Who wants to be walking around into mobile network's blackholes?! After all, ordering your brand new Sony Xperia 10 Plus contract only to find you can't use your data (never mind going over the allowance!) in your own house will be pretty not cool.

A simple website a number of our visitors have used is Open Signal which maps signals across all major mobile networks within the UK.

So which network has the best signal?

According to Which?, in their recent research, covering June to August 2017, they focused on 4G performance and found that EE offered the fastest average 4G download speeds of the four networks (EE, O2, Three and Vodafone). While EE customers enjoyed average 4G download speeds of 29Mbps, those using the O2 network had to put up with an average speed of just 15.1Mbps.

EE's network was also at the top of the list when it came to the availability of its 4G signal, with customers able to access it 78.5% of the time. Customers with Three had the poorest access to a 4G signal - they were able to access it just 57.1% of the time - that's only just more than half the time, 24/7!

Should I buy SIM-Only, and will it save money?

In truth, this answer will depend on your personal financial circumstances, in combination with your mobile phone usage requirements.

Out of our 1334 Sony Xperia 10 Plus deals, our cheapest Sony Xperia 10 Plus deal over the entire life of the contract is £396.00, this includes any upfront handset cost and cashback redemption.

oneCompare's team have seen a number of scenarios where our cheapest contract is actually cheaper than buying the phone SIM-free without any contract, this loophole can be a great way to save on your new phone and is largely possible as the Mobile networks subsidise the handset cost to gain you as a new customer.

A relatively simple SIM Only comparison calculation is to add up how much a Sony Xperia 10 Plus SIM Free phone would cost to buy i.e. this is where you buy the phone without a contract and pay for the full cost of the handset upfront.

The benefit here is flexibility: you're able to then compare the SIM Only contract market where Mobile networks often give you far better usage allowances and shorter contract terms. Once you've found a SIM Only contract that meets your needs, note the monthly cost over the course of 24 months and add this to your SIM Free Sony Xperia 10 Plus handset cost. You're now in a great position to compare this cost to a regular Sony Xperia 10 Plus Contract.

Did you know? You can compare SIM only deals from Sky, o2, Vodafone and all the other networks with oneCompare!

Pro Tip: A great way to save a few extra pounds when comparing SIM Only contracts, is to consider purchasing a pre owned Sony Xperia 10 Plus phone from the likes of MusicMagpie who provide warranties and flexible handset payment terms.
