About Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G - Review, Specs + more

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G should have the bigger brands like Apple worried. In only a few short years, the Chinese have come on leaps and bounds - and their crowning achievement is arguably this model from Xiaomi. It houses several extremely high-resolution cameras, looks great and is well-made. For selfie shooting you just have to push the camera up and you're ready right away.

Summary of Xiaomi Mi Mix 3:
  1. Very good value for money
  2. Mi Mix 5G - Memory
  3. Mi Mix 3 5G - Cameras
  4. Verdict on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G

It's only slightly different to the non-5G version before it  - so you need to ask yourself if you really must have 5G now, or maybe wait a few years once it is widely available in the UK. If that's the case, then there are only a few 5G handsets to choose from right now, but if you're lucky to live somewhere with 5G support then you're very lucky indeed. And given that, we'd say - go for it!

Very good value for money

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G comes with a case, a quick charger, a USB-C to 3.5-millimeter jack adapter and a USB-C cable. In some cases with a charger. Competitive devices include the OnePlus 6T and the Huawei P20. Also available in this price range is the Samsung Galaxy S8.

The Mi Mix 3 measures 157.9 × 74.7 × 8.5 mm and weighs 218g (about average). It has a ceramic backside for wireless charging support. Caution: It is not waterproof. The battery is 3200 mAh and can be charged quickly and wirelessly.

The 6.39-inch AMOLED display with Full HD + resolution has a pixel density of 403 ppi. It promises vivid colours, excellent contrast, good viewing angles and sufficient brightness.

It adapts to the phone and is not notched. Instead of a notch, Xiaomi has integrated a slider camera with the sliding process, you also start the Selfie mode. You can customise this - for example, an app can be opened instead. There is also an always-on option available, which must be enabled in the settings.

However in some reviews this wasn't particularly well received.

Mi Mix 5G - Memory

The phone has a Snapdragon processor, which is clocked at 8 × 2.8 GHz. The Adreno 630 GPU is also at the highest level. It works with Android 9.0 Pie. The user interface can be switched to full-screen gestures using the on-screen navigation keys.

You also have the ability to record calls and set up an auxiliary profile with Second Space.

Also important:

  • 2 SIM slots
  • 128 GB of internal memory - no memory expansion via microSD
  • no 3.5-millimeter headphone jack, but adapter included
  • NFC, Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band Wi-Fi
  • Fingerprint scanner behind

Mi Mix 3 5G - Cameras

The dual rear camera consists of 12 megapixel / 12 megapixel sensors with f / 1.8 and f / 2.4 apertures. The second camera has a 2x tele zoom. An optical image stabilisation is on board. The Camera app includes an AI-supported capture option. The dual front camera features a 24 megapixel main sensor and a 2 megapixel portrait mode depth sensor that works best in well-lit environments.

Both the front and rear cameras are equipped with an LED flash. If the detail is too soft for your taste, you can change the sharpness, the colour saturation and the contrast.

Verdict on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G

What a mouthful! But last year’s Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 was a competent, mid-priced flagship alternative that ultimately wasn’t quite as good as its biggest rival, the venerable OnePlus 6T. The differences between the two phones were marginal, but the OnePlus 6T’s superior rear camera and less fiddly software edged it slightly closer to a recommendation. Now that this one has been boosted with 5G it's worth of your consideration.

As with all of the 5G phones we've reviewed, in isolation, the Mi Mix 5G is a great bit of kit, but the premium 5G adds is hard to justify until the service really takes off. We were only able to reach speeds of 250Mbps in our time with the phone, and we had to hunt for 5G in central London.

And while we found EE to perform faster than Vodafone in general when we did have 5G signal in London, the service is in its infancy, and both networks are live in a handful of postcodes. As for the phone, the Mi Mix 5G needs a bit of TLC to get the best from it, so you'll want to tinker with the interface and play about with the camera settings. Once done though, it's a great buy.
